Bamboo on the Metolius

I got the chance to get out with my friend, Tony, recently on the Metolius River. Tony had just picked out his second bamboo fly rod from me, a very nice medium action 7′ 9″ 4 wt Spring Creek Series Rod to compliment an 8′ 0″ 5 wt rod he got from me several years ago. I took out my medium-fast action 7′ 9″ 4 wt Freestone Series Rod and we hit the water for a few hours. Fortunately, we found some very cooperative risers in the afternoon and picked up several nice rainbows on BWOs, Green Drakes, and Golden Stonefly dries. Tony out-fished me for the day, including landing a very nice 17″ rainbow that took his drake. Here are a couple of photos of our day.

  1. I’m so looking forward to building my rod with you. That looks like nice water. How warm was the water? Going to try and get out this Tuesday fish the East branch of the clarion river in north west PA. Just tying up a few 18 blue duns. Hopefully Dave this COVID will subside and I can build a rod. Thanks for the pictures

  2. Hi Michael,

Great to hear from you. Yep, the Metolius River is a beautiful place to fish. It’s a spring creek so it’s cold…stays the same temperature all year…about 48 degrees. There are a lot of highly educated fish in the Metolius River, but if you can find risers, you can usually get a few to take dry flies. It’s less than 30 minutes from my house so I get over there frequently.

I’m still in a waiting period relative to any of my bamboo rod building classes since we just don’ t know when things will clear up. I’ll keep you updated.

    Dave

  3. Thanks Dave for your reply. Going to fish nymphs and dry flies with a dropper tomorrow I’m going to try and learn the new technique of euro nymphing. Take care
