in Eastern California for a few days last week to fish Crowley Lake.\u00a0 They have been talking with me about joining them at Crowley for the past few years, with stories of lots of big fish.\u00a0 While fishing on Crowley was rather slow for us, on the way down there I stopped and fished the East Walker River for a couple of hours.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve read a lot about the East Walker for several years as being a great trout fishery, but I really didn&#8217;t know what to expect.\u00a0 The weather was cold, about 45 degrees, but the overcast conditions were a good sign for some fish activity.\u00a0 What I found was what seemed to be relatively high and off-color water, with the banks heavily lined with trees and brush.\u00a0 Take a look:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1778\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/?attachment_id=1778\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1778\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1778\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1778\" src=\"https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220002-580x326.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220002-580x326.jpg 580w, https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220002-580x326-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220002-580x326-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">East Walker River<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1779\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/?attachment_id=1779\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1779\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1779\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1779\" src=\"https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220010-580x326.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220010-580x326.jpg 580w, https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220010-580x326-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220010-580x326-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">East Walker River<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The only bugs I saw flying were midges and a few small blue-winged olives.\u00a0 No rising fish were seen.\u00a0 But, there was a lot of great pocket water that screamed nymphing, and although the water was on the high side, it was fairly easy to move along the river&#8217;s edge to hit the good &#8220;fishy looking spots&#8221;.\u00a0 I used my 9&#8242;\u00a0 0&#8243;\u00a0 3 wt Bamboo Czech Nymphing rod, and started with several variations of small mayfly and midge imitations.\u00a0 I picked up a few smaller brown trout on a #18 Psycho Mayfly pattern, but was a little discouraged that I wasn&#8217;t picking up more fish since the water looked so good.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1780\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/?attachment_id=1780\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1780\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1780\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1780\" src=\"https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220004-580x326.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220004-580x326.jpg 580w, https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220004-580x326-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bamboopursuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/P9220004-580x326-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A 10&#8243; brown that took a #18 Psycho Mayfly Pattern.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After going through my standard Go-To flies that usually work for me, I finally put on a #16 Prince Nymph just to see if any fish were interested.\u00a0 That was the ticket, and the fishing, or should I say catching turned on.\u00a0 In the next hour, I caught 8 fish on the Prince Nymph&#8230;6 browns and 2 rainbows&#8230;ranging in size from 12&#8243; Brown<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For any of you who are looking for an interesting fishery with some large rainbows and browns in eastern California, I would highly recommend the East Walker River.\u00a0 It was definitely not water for the beginning fisherman as it required strong wading skills, and it was very important to be able to put the fly in precise spots with little to no backcast room.\u00a0 But, with the right fly in the right spot, the fishing was great.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I got the chance to meet up with my &#8220;San Jose Fishing Buddies&#8221;
