Small Flies on Montana Spring Creeks

What does the fly patch on your fishing vest look like after 2 days of fishing Montana Spring Creeks….lots of small flies!  Ants, small dries, spinners, emergers, and midges.  These are all going back into the fly box now that I’m back in Oregon.

A Great Young Fly Caster Discovers Bamboo!

I met a great father/son team when I was at the IFFF Fly Fishing Fair last week in Livingston.  Mark and Cooper were very excited to hear about bamboo fly rods so I gave Cooper the chance to cast one of my fly rods.  He certainly had experience with graphite fly rods and had great casting skills.  Once I got him to slow down his tempo a little, he discovered the magic of bamboo.  His response was, “Wow, I can feel it bend all the way down into the cork grip.”  Here are a couple of photos of him trying out my rods.

Mary Ann and I got the chance to fish an evening on DePuy’s Spring Creek when we were in Livingston, Montana last week for the IFFF Fly Fishing Fair.  Small flies (midges and caddis) for rising rainbows, cutthroats, and browns.  We both fished 7′  6″  8 wt bamboo fly rods.  Here are a few photos from our evening.

Fishing Bamboo on Nelson’s Spring Creek in Livingston, Montana

I had a great time this past week at the International Federation of Fly Fishers annual fly fishing fair in Livingston, Montana, and was lucky to get out for a few days on the water before the fair started.  I was joined one day by my friend, Gary Turri, of California for a day on Nelson’s Spring Creek.  Gary is a fantastic angler and a Certified Fly Casting Instructor as well.  I put on one of my bamboo fly rods in Gary’s hands to fish for the day…we both fished 7′  6″    5 wt FreeStone Series bamboo rods.  We had lots of fun casting tiny flies for very educated browns, rainbows, and cutthroats, and we each netted a few fish.  Here are a few pictures of our day.

International Federation of Fly Fishers Fair – 2016

Mary Ann and I are getting ready to head to Livingston, Montana for a week to attend the upcoming International Federation of Fly Fishers Fair.  It should be a great time.  I’ll have a booth with my bamboo fly rods at the fair, and Mary Ann will be presenting several classes.  And…if everything works out, we’ll also get a little fishing time on the local springs creeks also.  Hope to see you at the fair.
